  1. Hello,
On my drive home today, it occurred to me how many times I've said the phrase "not enough" in conversations over the past couple of weeks. It got me thinking about how many ways I limit myself.
    1. Not enough money
    2. Not enough time
    3. Not enough trust
    4. Not enough knowledge
    5. Not enough business
    6. Not enough joy
    7. Not enough healthy food to appease my taste buds
    8. Not enough .... and the list goes on
My question to the group is "How do you limit yourself and what do you do to pull yourself out of that mind set?"
    Interested in your thoughts,
    Ruby

  2. Reiki Ethics

Many people coming for healing are vulnerable.  They may be vulnerable emotionally or physically.  It is imperative that you do not violate that trust that they place in you.

    1.      Confidentiality:  If a person is expressing an emotional release, as a result of the treatment it is essential that you maintain their confidentiality and respect their lives.  What goes on, on the Reiki table, stays on the Reiki table.  Don’t be discussing it with others and do not bring it up to the person should you see them out in public or with their families.  Consider it all to be private.  If the recipient should happen to bring it up in front of others, then it’s OK.  One should never assume the recipient wants to discuss it with you at any other time, except for when they are on your table.

    2.     Diagnosis:  Unless you are a licensed health care provider, you should never offer a diagnosis for any symptoms you may be treating.  The legal ramifications are rather serious for practicing medicine without a license.  It is best to refer the recipient to licensed medical or psychological professionals when appropriate.  Let the doctors make the diagnosis, and then you can offer Reiki as a means of enhancing their medical treatments.

    3.     Promise Healing:  Explain to people that Reiki sessions do not guarantee a cure, and are not a substitute for standard medical care.  Reiki does not do the healing.  Reiki is only the energy that the body uses to heal itself.  Therefore the ability and responsibility for healing lies within the recipient.  It is the innate intelligence of the human body that directs the energy to assist in a healing of that which the body determines to be of the highest and best good of the individual.  That’s why you might get a different outcome to a Reiki treatment than you expect.  You might want to use Reiki to get rid of a headache, but the energy gets applied to the emotional turmoil that is causing the headache.  Unlike most western medicine, Reiki will treat the cause versus the symptoms of any given illness.

  3. Reiki's Complimentary Add-ons

There are several topics often taught with Reiki, but are not Reiki.  They are as follows:

    1.      Reiki Guides:   Usui’s teachings do not include meeting your guides.  These practices were taken from Shamanism and other New Age sources.  However, belief in Reiki guides is simply that, a belief created to help folks come to terms in their own minds as to how Reiki works.  However, this belief is not necessary to practice Reiki or to do so effectively.

    2.     Psychic Powers:  In addition, Usui’s system was not designed to develop psychic powers.  However, many teachers claim this to be true.  Perhaps an increase in awareness from the attunements can serve to enhance one’s already existing intuition, but this a far cry from the abilities of a true psychic.

    3.     Chakras:  Some masters teach Chakras along with Reiki.  Chakras are energy vortexes in the body that correspond to specific physiological organs and systems.  These masters will often teach how to determine the spin of a Chakra and how to open or close it.  Manipulating Chakras is a very complicated skill and if you do not have specific and extensive instruction as to the proper techniques, it is best left well enough alone.  Reiki is powerful, passive, and can do no harm.  Allow Reiki’s universal intelligence do all the work.  That way there is no room for the possible errors that could occur with manually manipulating an energy vortex.

    4.     Energy exchange:  The idea of energy exchange is the belief that if one receives a gift, such as Reiki, that there must be an equal exchange of energy to balance the universal energy.  This philosophy was added to Reiki by some of Mrs. Takata’s students.  This was never part of the original Usui teachings.  Members of the Reiki Alliance used this belief to justify charging $10,000 for Reiki Master training.  I personally do not believe the universe requires the repayment of its gift of Reiki.  I believe that the universal life force energy is already infinitely abundant and is in no need of our assistance in maintaining that particular type of balance.  In addition, if we believe that we are all one, then have we not just given ourselves Reiki, when we pass it on to someone else?  I do not see this exchange of energy as a give and take, but more like a cycle.  What goes around comes around.  However, the belief that you can’t get something for nothing is so deeply ingrained into some folk’s thinking that they have a need to put a dollar value on it, in order to give Reiki a sense of worth.  If you are a healer who makes their living healing others, it would be essential to charge and appropriate to do so.  Not because the universe demands an energy exchange, but because you require a monetary exchange to cover the costs of your time and service.  The issue isn’t so much as to whether there should be a charge for giving Reiki or not.  It is an issue of being honest as to why you charge or do not charge for giving Reiki.

  4. Reiki Touch Issues

Touch is an essential part of wholeness and love.  Without touch, we can die.  In the early 1900’s they did an experiment in the nursery of an orphanage dealing with touch or the lack there of.  The babies were divided into 2 groups.  One group was held during feedings, rocked, sung to, and touched a lot by the nursing staff.  The other group was only touched when propping a bottle up feeding and changing diapers.  Other than that, the nurses were not allowed to touch them.  Unfortunately this experiment was not stopped soon enough and some of the babies from the group seldom touched, actually shriveled up and died.  So touch is vital to the very existence of humankind.

The power of touch is part of what makes Reiki such an effective healing tool.  To touch others as a Reiki healer is a very loving act, which should be exercised with integrity and respect for the recipient.

    1.      Since Reiki energy easily passes through clothing, there should never be a need for the recipient to disrobe.

    2.     In addition, it is always a good practice ask permission before even reaching out to touch someone.   If they are a minor, it is vital to ask their parent(s) for permission to do so.

    3.     Be sure to ask if they have any specific areas they wish one to avoid (besides the obvious private areas).  For example:

            a.     Someone who may have been strangled may not want anyone to touch their throats.

            b.    Someone, who may have nearly suffocated, may not want a stack of hands on their chest.

            c.    Or maybe they might have a bad burn and to physically touch it would cause intense pain.

In these instances, one can hold their hands 3-5 inches above the affected area and offer energy from that location.  This respects the recipient’s wishes and does not violate their trust in you.

    4.     Hand pressure is another area to pay attention to, especially in a group treatment, where there is a stacking of hands.  Sometimes this exerts too much weight on an already sensitive area.  Be sure to maintain a light touch as a group.  This is also important for those working on the face or back of the head.  You don’t want the recipient to feel like you are trying to push their heads through the face-support of the table.

    5.      Because touch is also a vital component to intimacy, it is not at all impossible for a male recipient to become aroused while being treated by a female practitioner.  First of all realize that this is natural, secondly do not bring undue attention to the situation, and thirdly move your hands and your focus to another area of the body.

  5. Reiki Attunements

    Definition of Attunement

Anyone can learn Reiki all that is required is a desire to learn and the attunement (initiation) from a qualified Reiki Instructor. Attunement into Reiki is a necessary step, as this allows the alignment to the Reiki frequency. With this alignment, our energy merges with the Reiki energy and we become a conduit or channel, much like a radio being tuned to a station. This energy is then always available and it can be applied for healing effects to numerous situations.

Reiki energy is the healing energy of the Universe. It represents a matrix of non-dualistic energy, which permeates all things. A Reiki practitioner harnesses and channels this vital energy via a series of attunements which, in effect, enhances the effectiveness of one’s ability to transfer Reiki energy to oneself and others.

The attunement is basically a blessing to bring you into an awareness of that which you have always had.  It’s like having something so familiar around you that you forgot it was there.  The attunement just brings it back into your consciousness as you become an active participant once again.

Most Reiki teachers use a ritual or ceremonial style of attunement in which they may touch your hands, head and shoulders and move around you as you sit in a chair. They may also blow air across your heart area. The Reiki teacher will tell you when or if they wish you to place your hands in a specific location or position during the attunement.  Most Reiki teachers ask you to keep your eyes closed during the actual attunement.

    During the Attunement

Whatever form is chosen for the transmission, during the attunement you may or may not experience feelings of energy moving. Some people see colors or forms, symbols, hear sounds or have physical sensations. Other people do not have any unusual sensations at all this does not make a difference in their ability to use Reiki.

Many people can feel the attainment as It is done, as heat or waves of energy flowing into their body or they may see light etc..  Some people do not have any such experience at all other than perhaps feeling both more relaxed and energized than usual. Most people, but not all, who regularly feel subtle energies are able to feel some of the energy coming in.

    After Effects

It is recommended that you Drink lots of water after an attunement. Attunements and treatments sometimes may (rarely) cause physical detoxification, some people report a lot of emotional processing for up to 3 weeks or 21 days after an attunement. Anyone one getting Reiki treatments and or attunements is encouraged to drink lots of water and reminded that in some rare cases the release of toxins and/or energetic or physical realignments will cause them to feel worse for a small time before they feel better. Please contact your Reiki teacher if you have some unusual experience you feel is related to your attunement  Any severe or continuing unusual discomfort should be referred to an appropriate medical professional because it could possibly   not be related to the attunement at all.

    Activating Reiki

After the attunement you will want to practice activating and using your Reiki as soon as you can. You may get the sensations of feeling heat in your hands or sensing energy flow or not. Sometimes it takes a bit of practice to get the hang of running the Reiki energy.

  6. Reiki Levels

Traditionally there are three levels of Reiki.

LEVEL ONE is for those who wish to learn to use the Reiki Energy.  The class is taught by a Reiki master trained to teach the class and to administer the attunements.  Traditionally the Usui healing system uses four attunements to enhance a student’s ability to work with Reiki energy.  The Reiki One class material generally includes the hand positions, the principles, and the history associated with Reiki.

LEVEL TWO introduces students to 3 primary Reiki symbols and provides an additional attunement.  The Power symbol, Mental-Emotional healing symbol, and the Distance symbol are taught as well as their meanings and applications.  There are differing opinions as to how much time should pass between taking a Level One class and a Level Two class.  It usually depends upon the individual and how easily they process all the energy received during the Level One class.  A general rule of thumb is 2-3 months.  However, there are folks who can successfully handle a Level II class with a single month.

LEVEL THREE is the Master Level of Reiki where a 4th symbol is taught that completes the first 3 symbols learned in Level Two.  In Level three, students are taught how to teach Reiki and how to pass on the attunements for all three levels of Reiki.

Upon occasion the non-Traditional Reiki Schools have created an additional class between Level Two and Level Three.  They introduce students to non-Reiki techniques, which they feel are complimentary to Reiki or could enhance one’s use and understanding of Reiki.  Such examples would be:  Meditation, breathing techniques, crystals, pendulums, color, sound, etc.

Reiki is such an awesome modality that it can easily be used in conjunction with other healing techniques.  What we teach today is primarily the original Makao Usui practices.  These basics, when fully mastered, stand firmly on their own as powerful healing tools.

In my personal practice, I combine Reiki with massage, crystals, signature cell, and overlays.  But I find that Reiki is by far the most simple and the most powerful of the modalities.

  7. Reiki Principles – Living the Principals – Being Reiki

There are many variations on the wording of the principals due to translation protocols.  However, they are all basically the same as they address:  anger, worry, gratitude, self-work, and kindness.  My favorite version of the principles is this:

     For today only, anger not.

    For today only, worry not.

    Be grateful and humble

    Do your work with appreciation.

    Be kind to all.

Some may wonder what is meant by “anger not, worry not”.  This does not mean one should not feel anger or worry.  It means one can become aware of the feelings, and realize that they are not in harmony with Universal Life force Energy.  It is an opportunity to evaluate one’s reactions and what may have triggered them.  Anger is mostly triggered when our expectations are not being met.  We need to be honest with ourselves and determine if first of all, “Are these my expectations or someone else’s beliefs pushed upon me in my early development?”  And secondly, “Are these expectations realistic?”  One can determine this by honestly answering if these expectations serve the highest and best good of all, or just one’s own selfish wants and desires?

The same applies to worry, which is in reality nothing more than fear.  Are these fears learned behavior?  Are they realistic?  One thing to realize about fear is that it is not in the now.  When one is fearful they are either living in the past or in the future.  The past, you can’t do anything to change, and the future is not guaranteed to ever happen.  So this principle encourages us to live in today.  Change the things you can, accept the things you cannot change, and exercise wisdom in discerning which is which.

Gratitude tempered with humility is a mighty powerful force backed by the Universal Law of Attraction.  The more you focus on the good things in your life and express gratitude for them, the more they replicate in your life.  Like attracts like.  The Universe is abundant and the more you focus on your current abundance, the more abundance you will attract to you.  This abundance can manifest itself in many ways, such as, love, peace, healing, harmony, quality relationships, etc.

“Do your work with appreciation” does not apply to your paying job, your housework, or your homework.  The word “work” refers to one’s self-mastery or life purpose.  One is encouraged to view this kind of work with appreciation.   For me, that would be appreciating the fact that nothing is permanent or hopeless or even incorrect.  I can appreciate that it is all about the journey and exercising free will as I go.

“Be kind to all” is pretty self-explanatory and is also very beneficial as the universal law of Attraction kicks in here too.  We need to expand our understanding of the word “all” to not only include humans, but animals, plants, birds, and planet earth.

The Reiki principals are the heart of Reiki.  The only real mastery, is the mastery of self.  Usui taught that dedication to the principles and living them was essential.  The real intent of the principles is to bring about enlightenment, peaceful living, and a compassionate heart.  Thus the Usui Reiki system was an “enlightenment” system that allowed one to heal ones self and others.  It was designed to connect one to and synchronize one with the Universal Life force Energy of love, light , and harmony.  There are very few who teach Reiki in this manner.  In the West it is mostly taught only as a healing system, and even more so as a business.  In the East, Reiki is not something you do, it is something you are.

We can cloud our minds with attachments, things, techniques, endless debates over right and wrong.  Your focus determines your reality.  Where awareness is, there you are.  We encourage you to let go of the outcome, the worry, of conditionings, of need, and simply be mindful of these principles for they can truly change your life.

  8. What is Reiki?

Reiki is essentially broken down into two parts: "Rei" and "Ki". Rei represents- Universal, Spirit, mystery and gift.  And Ki represents Energy, life force, talent and feeling.  These two parts combined form the word or ‘Kanji’, which represents universal life force energy. So Reiki is a union with the ‘Universal Spirit’ and your life force energy and in many respects describes what actually occurs when someone is practicing Reiki.

Reiki is a Japanese healing technique based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. Reiki practitioners believe that everything – the universe, and all sentient beings - consist of spiritual energy. This is our life force – what animates us, interconnects us to each other and is what we tap into for our healing work. Reiki practitioners believe that when a person’s “ki” or energy is strong and free flowing, their body and mind is in a positive state of health. The ultimate goal and benefits associated with Reiki are to feel more balanced, healthier and happier and progress toward a state of self-awareness.

Reiki practitioners are compassionate facilitators. They work by acting as a channel, allowing the energy present within and around us to flow through themselves and into the recipient. Ultimately, the recipient is the one who does the healing by taking in and assimilating the energy as needed. Part of the healing journey requires that the person to be healed take responsibility for their part in the process.

This quote by Misa Hopkins (The Root of All Healing) illustrates this point beautifully:  “The human being’s ability to heal is extraordinary. The power of love and intention a person can generate for healing is remarkable. Using the power of your mind and heart is in complete alignment with the law of nature. Bodies regenerate themselves naturally. Sometimes we need to help our bodies remember how to do that healthily and if we choose to do this consciously, we embark on a healing journey.”

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including mind, body & spirit.  It creates many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and a sense well being. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of healing and self-improvement that anyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and always creates a beneficial effect. Reiki is a wonderful tool to use as a complement to traditional and alternative medicine, and is practiced in many hospitals, medical care and therapeutic settings. It should not be a substitute for regular medical care from a qualified professional. However, it can help counteract the side effects of medication, such as nausea and fatigue from chemotherapy, or make it possible to reduce dosages of painkillers because of its own ability to minimize or alleviate discomfort.

The ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to effortlessly tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Dr. Usui decided to add the Reiki Principles to the practice of Reiki. The principles came in part from the five principles of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Dr. Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for his or her healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

  9. REIKI ENERGY EXERCISE

Learning to sense Reiki energy is much like learning a new language.  The sensations are often subtle and may take some time and practice to become adept at sensing the energy.  Hare are some descriptions of what folks may sense when feeling the Reiki energy.

    Warm

    Radiating

Like heat from a candle flame or your coffee mug

    Cool

    Still

Like the air inside of your freezer

    Static

    Magnetic

Like hair drawn to a balloon

    Tacky

    Sticky

    Like tape or silly putty

    Vibrating

    Shimmering

Like the feel of one’s vocal cords when humming

    Pulsating

    Wave-Like

Like a heartbeat or the rhythm of gentle ocean waves over your toes

    Stretchy

    Elastic

Like a rubber band expanding and contracting

    Tingling

    Bubbly from the inside out

Like numb fingers coming back to life, without the pain

    Swirling

    Circular

Like a mini-whirlpool or water going down the drain

Remember, these sensations are very subtle.  You may feel more than one of these sensations or none at all.  Some folks say that when you feel nothing at all, the energy is addressing emotional or spiritual issues versus physical ones.  The beauty of Reiki is that as long as you and the recipient give the intent for healing, the energy will go where it is most needed whether either of you feel anything or not.  It’s like taking an aspirin for a head ache or a sprained ankle.  You don’t have to tell the aspirin where to go.  The innate intelligence of your body will send it where it is most needed to serve the body’s highest and best good.

Now let’s try a few things to see if you can feel your own energy.

    1.  Begin by gently shaking your hands, flexing your fingers, and then relax them.

    2.  Take a couple deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.

    3.  Rub your palms together. Then press them together in the Namaste position while raising your elbows slightly to increase the pressure.  Hold the pressure to the count of 5, release, and repeat 2 more times.

    4.  With fingers together and palms slightly cupped, gently press and release the hands together creating a slight suction action between the palms.

    5.  You should begin to feel a little ball of heat growing between your palms.  Play with it a little bit to register that particular sensation in your mind.

    6.  As you continue to play with this energy, close your eyes and begin to visualize this sensation as a little ball of moving/vibrating energy.

    7.  Keep your eyes closed, keep focusing on the ball, then begin to see how far apart you can pull your hands and still feel the energy ball.

    8.  If you come apart too far, then gently come back in till you sense it again.  Begin to move your palms in and out to see if you notice a push-n-pull sensation as your energy ball begins to expand.

    9.  Keeping your eyes closed helps to focus on the sensations you are experiencing.  Experiment and see how large the ball expands between your hands.  Once you’ve made it as large as you can and still be able to feel the sensation, open your eyes to see just where your hands are.  Now gently press the ball of energy into your heart chakra

If you are having problems feeling anything with this exercise, then try a few of these alternatives:

Close your eyes and place your hand as close to your cheek as you can, without actually touching it.  Do you feel anything?  Heat?  Where?  Fingers?  Palms?  Any other sensations?  Feel free to check all 5 senses.

Another way is to hold one palm open and slowly pass the other open palm over it.  You have a spinning chakra in the center of each palm.  You can feel a subtle displacement of energy as you pass one chakra through the other.

For some folks, the back of the hand is more sensitive.  So hold one palm up and pass the top of the other hand over it.  Once again you’ll feel the displacement or merging of energy from the chakras.

Another option is to hold one palm open and take the pointer finger of the other hand and draw an “X” through the chakra of the open palm.  You can also do a circle counter-clockwise and then again clock-wise to see if you notice an subtleties.  The hand has a chakra out the top as well as the palm, so you might want to try feeling this energy as well.  Some folks thing the top of the hand can be more sensitive, especially if the palm is calloused.

Now that you can feel your energy, work with a partner and see if you can create a ball between one of your hands and one of theirs.  Practice will heighten one’s sensitivity and increase one’s awareness of Reiki energy.  So play with it whenever you are just waiting around in a line, or a meeting, or a class that doesn’t involve a lot of concentration.

My first encounter, or should I say my first “conscious encounter” of a fairy in my dreams

I think her name was some form of “Bria”; a Celtic sounding name.  How to describe her…beauty, wonder, magic, grace, and a multitude of shades and textures; the kind one might find in a forest.  At first it was like having a gigantic lunar moth glide into your vision, up close and personal, so as to force you to step back in order to view it in its entirety.  It wasn’t her shape so much as the grace and manner of gliding and fluttering ripples along her gossamer carpet, that gave one the impression of a lunar moth in flight.  Yet when she dipped below the water’s surface, she took on the characteristic grace of a lovely and elegant sting ray.  Her very essence elicited feelings of playfulness, wisdom, and peace.

The children and I seemed to be the only ones who could see her.  All the adults could only see the business of their mundane lives.  She was so like the Pied Piper to those of us who could see her.  We were easily swept up in the wonder and magic of her as we gleefully danced across the meadow with her.  Every step, flutter and flash revealed a gorgeous and mesmerizing view of the patterns upon her huge gossamer carpet.  I recall my efforts to dance around to a point where I might be able to see her magnificent carpet in its full glory.  No sooner had I conjured the thought in my mind, she softly lit upon the meadow grasses and unfurled her gossamer carpet for me to see.

It appeared as if she and the carpet were joined; they were all one.  The fairy herself was so poised and so elegant…much like a “true queen” filled with love and wisdom to be bestowed upon all within her magical realm.  It was then that I became conscious of my great niece, Bria, speaking to me in a voice filled with awe.  “Oh Aunt Jackie, you are so lucky.  You can really see her, you can see ‘-----------‘.”  My great niece actually spoke the fairy’s name, but it was as if she were speaking in tongues, for I could not comprehend it enough to even recall the sound of it.  I was so enamored in the wonder of it all that I could barely think as all.  I was pure sensation.  Her forest carpet was like eye candy that fed the soul unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.  My first impression was that of the many shades of green, gray and blue plus lots of shapes and textures.  Then it became so clear that this was an elaborate tapestry of an entire forest community; the land of the fairies…

Once again our fairy apparition took flight and we all trailed along behind her being thrilled by every glimmer and furl of her gossamer green forest.  As we neared a body of water, I recall being slightly distracted by the yell of an adult warning us to be careful near the water.  As I returned my focus to the fairy, I noticed that her detail was not nearly as bold and clear as before.  As I wondered about this change, she glided down to rest upon the surface of the water.  She seemed to rest there, gently bobbing in the motion of the water itself.  Then slowly she began to immerse herself into the depths of the water.  The deeper she descended, the blurrier her appearance as the tiny bubbles pushed out from under her furls to race to the surface.  In the blink of an eye, she was gone from sight.  It left me with the strangest sense of yearning, of wanting to follow and follow and follow.  (sigh)

The yearning was so strong, that I actually found myself stepping into the water.  As soon as my feet entered the water I became aware of sound.  Up to this point, I do not think she had made any sounds.  Then I realized she was talking.  Once again, I could not make out the words.  I leaned down to the water’s surface in an attempt to clearly hear what she might be saying.  My ears and my mind strained to make it out.  But it wasn’t until the ears of my heart opened up and I began to absorb the words.  I am sure that my heart recorded more of the message than my brain could manage to write upon this page.  “Teach the children what you know.  It is important for them to know.”  So here I sit, now awake; or should I say “awakened”?  The message has been delivered.  What shall I do with it now?  What is it that I know?  What is it that the children need to know?  Perhaps she shall return someday soon to help guide me along the way.
